Gas Flaring

Flaring in Industry

In the oil and gas industry, hydrocarbons that cannot be used or recovered in the production process are released directly to the atmosphere via venting or burning, so-called flaring. While emissions have been difficult to estimate in detail, flaring is clearly a major source of black carbon in the Arctic and problematic because the emissions occur in the far north, where the climate impact is the largest because the soot darkens snow and ice. Measures to reduce emissions from the oil and gas industry include recovering the excess gas rather than burning it.
